Hradec Králové - The Hradec Králové Region is preparing a complete reconstruction of the heritage-listed building of J. K. Tyl Grammar School in Hradec Králové. The cost of the repairs is expected to reach at least 100 million crowns, which the region hopes to obtain from European Union funds. The region is currently preparing the project documentation, and the actual work could begin within a few years. Jiří Hošna from the region's press department told ČTK today.

The school building, designed in 1924 by architect Josef Gočár, is among the most significant works of functionalist architecture in the Czech Republic. Along with the Museum of Eastern Bohemia and the Elbe power station Hučák, it is the most important modern architectural structure in the region. The building often appears in most promotional materials for the city and the region.
"The building has not undergone any major reconstruction during its existence, which has left it architecturally very clean on one hand, but the entire complex already shows numerous signs of wear," said the regional councilor for education, Jiří Nosek, about the repairs.
The reconstruction will involve the entire school building, including the replacement of windows. Workers may also carry out some remediation work. In agreement with the conservationists, some later insensitively executed structural modifications of the school could be removed. Approximately 600 students attend the school, with around 50 teachers working there.
