Brno - Representatives of the South Moravian Region are willing to allocate funds in the budget for the construction of a concert hall for Brno, which the Brno Philharmonic has been pursuing for about 100 years. However, this is conditional on state participation in the financing. The regional council today approved the intention to co-finance the project, and the office will now prepare a memorandum, said Governor Michal Hašek (Czech Social Democratic Party) to reporters. "Yes, if there are real funds from the state budget and a clearly defined amount from the city of Brno, we are prepared to clearly define a specific amount from the funds of the South Moravian Region," said the governor. According to him, the Janáček Cultural Center could be built within two to three years in such a case. Project designers have estimated construction costs at 1.2 billion crowns, of which a third should go to the construction of underground garages. According to local government representatives, this part could be financed by a private investor. According to the governor, the region could contribute about 100 million crowns. This is half of the funds that city representatives were hoping for. In the past, they spoke about Brno finding 200 million in the budget for the project, just like the region. The rest of the funds they wanted to obtain elsewhere - from the state or from European funds. The Janáček Cultural Center is planned to be built in the center of Brno next to the Besední House. There is currently a parking lot on the site. The new venue is to become the home for the Brno Philharmonic and the opera and ballet of the National Theatre Brno. Currently, the orchestra does not have suitable concert spaces. "We actually don’t even know how our philharmonic sounds, we would have to go to some quality hall and listen to it there," stated Alena Štěpánková Veselá, the chairwoman of the Brno Society of Friends of Music, earlier. Recently, there have been speculations among Brno councilors that the plot of land in the center opposite the Besední House is not suitable for a concert hall, especially for traffic reasons. This week, the mayor's deputy, Daniel Rychnovský (Christian and Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party), rejected this. "All those traffic discussions have long been resolved. We are on the verge of issuing the zoning decision," he stated.
