Krnov - The Krnov City Hall is preparing a comprehensive renovation of Chářovský Park, which is a cultural monument. The cost of the reconstruction, which will include adjustments to ponds, will be about 13 million crowns. The city aims to obtain the funds from European grants. This was stated today by Dita Círová, spokesperson for the Krnov City Hall.

"The reconstruction addresses three areas. The renovation of ponds, the restoration of paths and the addition to their network, and the overall revitalization of greenery. Regarding the ponds, we plan to renovate their technology, which means everything from the inlet to the outlet structure. In the project, we also deal with reinforcing the most dilapidated parts of the banks and removing the excess material that has gradually settled in the ponds. Essentially, we want to restore the original size of the ponds and build new banks and all other necessary components that belong to waterworks," said landscape architect Radek Pavlačka from the Atelier Zahrada Olomouc.

The network of paths will also be renewed, maintaining the existing extent and using the same, predominantly sandy, materials. "Some paths that are no longer visible today will be renovated, and we have also proposed three routes made of stone slabs with grassy joints. Their layout is based on the logic of existing paths and common visitor movement directions," clarified Pavlačka. All furniture, that is, benches and trash bins, will be replaced with new ones.

Interventions will also be made to the greenery. "About half of the inventory will reach a state over the next few years where it will need to be removed. Therefore, we need to already plant young growth in the park, which involves cutting down some areas so that the young trees have enough sunlight and air," said the architect. New trees, mostly conifers, will be proposed throughout the park in larger or smaller groups, and solitary specimens will occasionally appear. The shrub layer will see the planting of shrubs, with evergreen species particularly placed in the park's edge areas to screen it from the surroundings. Some areas will be supplemented with perennials, and there will also be an expansion of grassy areas.

Chářovský Park, which is a cultural monument, was established in 1899. It covers an area of 2.2 hectares and features a number of interesting tree species, especially conifers. Its species richness suffered significantly due to delayed cultivation interventions, inappropriate plantings in the 1970s, but primarily as a result of floods in 1995 and 1997. The park has a network of paths and several bridges to cross water areas.
