Brno – Some cities in the South Moravian Region have completed or initiated work on residential projects during the past electoral term, which will increase the number of municipal apartments. For example, over 100 new apartments have been created in Brno, with hundreds more to come from new projects. Construction of new apartments is also underway in Břeclav and Znojmo, according to responses from municipal spokespersons to ČTK. The cities are also focusing on expanding social housing.
In the regional capital, 114 new apartments have been added in the last four years. This figure includes new constructions and the conversion of non-residential spaces into apartments, said Radka Loukotová from the press center of the Brno City Hall. According to Loukotová, Brno has approximately 27,000 municipal apartments, with around 200 of those being social apartments. Organizations are assisting in acquiring these apartments, including non-profit organizations and entities such as the city-established Socio Info Point and Housing Contact Point. "On an official day, approximately 30 to 40 people visit this office," Loukotová noted.
Among the largest residential projects initiated by the city is the construction of housing for seniors in the Holásky district of Brno-Tuřany and in the Bystrc district. Completion is expected next year. An additional 300 apartments, including cooperative ones, will be built on Kamenný vrch in Nový Lískovec, with work expected to begin in the fall. The city also has a project to renovate an apartment building on Mostecká Street and plans to build over 30 apartments in Holásky. Future plans include apartment buildings on Tereza Nováková Street and at Míru Square.
Residential construction is also being pursued in Břeclav. According to municipal spokesperson Ivana Solaříková, the city is renting out 115 municipal apartments. "We have another 81 apartments in a housing block for seniors and persons with disabilities, managed by the Břeclav Senior Home," Solaříková stated.
The city currently has no social apartments, but it is starting to build new social housing in the U Splavu area. This will replace a former police accommodation facility. The construction of 28 apartments will cost 61 million crowns, with funding secured from the Integrated Regional Operational Program. "The apartments will be designated for young families and for seniors over 65 years or individuals with health or social disabilities," Solaříková said.
By 2028, two single-storey houses will be built there, each containing four 1+kk apartments primarily intended for seniors. There will also be two three-storey houses, each with ten apartments of various sizes, Solaříková added.
In Znojmo, there are currently 1,150 municipal apartments. According to city spokesperson Petra Šuláková, there is high demand for them. They are also working to expand the supply of municipal housing. "Znojmo is currently addressing the construction of an apartment building where there will be new specially designated apartments," Šuláková said.
Applicants for specially designated apartments are placed on a waiting list. "The waiting period for specially designated apartments is approximately up to one year, unless it involves a priority case according to the Principles for Rental of Specially Designated Apartments," Šuláková stated. In contrast, the city currently does not have plans to purchase apartments from private entities, according to the spokesperson.
