The first part of the City Interventions Jablonec nad Nisou 2013 has started. The project builds on the successful format of "City Interventions," which has already taken place in Bratislava, Prague, Brno, and Košice. The idea arose from the professional need of architects to point out and name problems in public spaces, initiate a discussion, and, above all, offer possible solutions. On the website www.mestskezasahyjablonec.cz, it is possible to add suggestions for places in the city that trouble us, where we do not feel comfortable, or where we miss something, until November 11, 2012. This collection of suggestions will serve as a database of problematic places, but also as a source of inspiration for the main parts of the City Interventions Jablonec nad Nisou 2013. Already at the beginning, on September 9, 2012, a call will be published for architects, students, and others to propose their architectural intervention for any location. As the organizers state: "Even a small and inexpensive intervention can often bring about significant positive changes." Proof can be found in the catalogs from past City Interventions, many of which have successfully progressed to realization. "Sometimes it only takes a few trees, a bench in the right place, adjustments to traffic, and pedestrian connections. It's about discovering and utilizing the potential of individual places," add the organizers of the event. After the submission of proposals on March 3, 2013, a large exhibition will be prepared. Its curator will be architecture critic and native of Jablonec Karolína Jirkalová. The exhibition will provide a range of ideas donated to the city and can become a springboard for improving specific places. The exhibition will be accompanied by author presentations of the proposals, allowing the public to familiarize themselves with specific projects and their authors. The format of City Interventions has already taken place in Bratislava, Prague, Brno, and Košice and has received great acclaim from the authors of the proposals themselves. They responded to the call that allowed them to solve long-considered issues of the public environment. The authors work without expecting a fee, on projects commissioned by no one, solely from a civic-professional need to improve the quality of urban space. "It's not architecture for free, but it's architecture as a gift to the city," says co-author of the City Interventions idea, architect Matúš Vallo. The organizers of the Jablonec City Interventions believe that the event will resonate with the public and city leadership similarly to elsewhere, and this gift will contribute to improving our environment.
