We would like to invite you to participate in the City Interventions Brno 2011 project.
City interventions can take many forms.
The main idea is to try to identify certain points, places, and situations in the city that we believe do not function as they should or do not bring to residents what they potentially could. Often, these are places that everyone seems to have resigned from; no one has found an opportunity for profit in them. However, we do not want to limit this project to merely identifying such places; we want to find real solutions for them. To show that even small changes in an urban context can have a significant effect.
Problems and opportunities are two sides of the same coin. If you have one, you have the other. We offer a platform where critical observation of our environment can be employed for its improvement.
The project is a place where various interests can meet: residents of the city, city officials, architects, artists, pundits, and experts. The project is not intended to generate profit or grand promises; it aims to attempt to change something. At the same time, it represents a way to demonstrate further steps and possibilities in creating public space. It seeks to overturn the traditional method of distributing urban contracts, helping the city and its surroundings without fee claims and without waiting for a call.
The City Interventions project has already gone through two rounds in Bratislava, which sparked a significant response. As a result, there were 63 proposals for specific solutions. The exhibition took place in the Slovak National Gallery, a catalog was created, and a documentary film was made; one of the proposals is being prepared for implementation, and two have been realized. www.mestskezasahy.sk
City Interventions Prague 2010 presented 81 proposals. The exhibition took place in the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art. Currently, three projects have been realized, and another three are in progress. www.mestskezasahy.cz
Based on this success, we decided to organize the project on the same basis in Brno. This time, additionally with direct support from the magistrate, which could ensure better communication with officials for any further development of proposals or even their realization.
If you feel this challenge speaks to you, please confirm your participation promptly via email at [email protected], where we will also answer any questions you may have.
This call includes the terms and deadlines for submission of proposals.
