Mikulčice (Hodonín Region) – A crane today set a bridge structure across the Morava River between Mikulčice in the Hodonín Region and Kopčany in the Skalica District of Slovakia. Monika Brindzáková, the spokesperson for the region, told ČTK. The project's aim is to connect the heritage areas of the Slavic settlement for cyclists, pedestrians, visitors, and locals. The costs amount to nearly 3.8 million euros (approximately 100 million crowns). Most of the expenses will be covered by the European Union, with the remainder by both countries and regions. The work is expected to be completed later this year.
The placement of the structure was observed by the South Moravian governor Bohumil Šimek (ANO) and the governor of the Trnava Region, Jozef Viskupič. "So far, we have each been observing it from our own riverbank. I believe that this year, at the turn of October and November, we will walk together on the finished footbridge over the Morava River," noted Šimek.
According to him, the footbridge is a long-term effort of the South Moravian and Trnava self-governing regions to create a cross-border Archeopark Mikulčice-Kopčany. "The footbridge will connect the monuments of the Great Moravian Empire, as well as unique nature, including the connection of two national networks of bike paths," added Šimek.
The bridge is over 140 meters long. Its width is almost five meters and its height nine meters. The bridge is followed by the embankment structure, along which the bike path will run. The project also includes an already built bike path that connects part of the former Slavic settlement Předhradí with the forest path leading to the bridge.
On the Slovak side, infrastructure will be created necessary to connect the area of the river and the footbridge with the village of Kopčany and the church of St. Margaret of Antioch. Archaeological surveys will also take place there.
