Ostrov - The current fire station of the volunteer firefighters in Ostrov, Karlovy Vary Region, is likely facing demolition. A new facility is already being built on Jáchymovská Street, and the firefighters are expected to move there in the spring of next year. Instead of the unsuitable building in the heritage zone, the town hall plans to construct an apartment building, said deputy mayor Pavel Čekan (Local) to reporters today.
The original fire station on Karlovarská Street was built by local residents during Action Z, that is, a volunteer work initiative. The volunteer firefighters have been based there since 1990, but they are expected to relocate to a new fire station at the beginning of next year. The building no longer meets technical requirements, so the town hall intends to demolish it and build a new structure in its place.
An architectural office is currently preparing a study for this plan. The intention is to build a multi-story building, estimated to house around ten to twelve apartments. It is an attractive location near the Ostrov Castle with a park and the Palace of Princes, and this year, the construction of the apartment building Myslivna was also completed there. The parcel is part of the city’s heritage zone, so conservationists will oversee the construction.
The town hall would like to utilize subsidies for the financing of the construction. However, if they are unsuccessful, they would cover the costs from their budget. Residential construction is one of the priorities of the seventeen-thousand-strong town. "We could build one apartment for around 2.5 million crowns, which would be the size of a standard apartment, about 60 to 70 square meters. When we talk about ten to twelve apartments, it would also be somewhere between 30 and 40 million crowns," Čekan said.
Construction of the new fire station, costing 70 million crowns, began last fall. It is being built on Jáchymovská Street, where there is also an emergency rescue station, and since last September, builders have been constructing a station for professional firefighters there as well.
