Since the beginning of 2006, the Moravian Gallery in Brno has been managing the Birthplace of Josef Hoffman in Brtnice near Jihlava. The museum dedicated to this world-renowned architect and designer from the first half of the 20th century is a joint institution of the MG and the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna (MAK).
Museum night events have been taking place across the Czech Republic since 2004, and the Moravian Gallery in Brno was the first cultural institution to initiate this amazing tradition in the Brno metropolis. The Birthplace of Josef Hoffman opened its doors after dark for the first time last year, specifically on Saturday, June 3rd. This year, the Moravian Gallery in Brno decided to open the Brtnice exhibition for free on Friday, June 22, from 7:00 PM to midnight. The accompanying program for museum night is even richer than last year, and therefore we hope that this event will significantly revitalize and strengthen the social life not only in Brtnice but also in the entire region.
Visitors will have the opportunity to view the permanent exhibition “Josef Hoffman: Timeless Design” and the current unique exhibition “Josef Hoffman – Adolf Loos. Ornament and Tradition” for free and during an unconventional opening time. This exhibition is dedicated to the significant dispute between two world-renowned artists about ornamentation in architecture. Josef Hoffman (1870–1956) is presented here as one of the main representatives of the decorative artists, the director of the artisanal workshops Wiener Werkstätte, whose designs continue to fascinate with their endless richness of ornaments. Opposing him is Adolf Loos (1870–1933) as an opponent of all ornamentation and the author of the polemic “Ornament and Crime.” This issue can be explained to interested visitors through both an expert commentary in the exhibition and a lecture by the curator of MG, Martina Straková, about Adolf Loos titled Is Ornament a Crime? The lecture will be accompanied by rich visual documentation and will allow visitors to familiarize themselves with Adolf Loos's work, which is not presented in the exhibition.
Visitors will also encounter ornamentation in an art workshop titled Ornament in the Work of Josef Hoffman, which is designed for all ages. Free inspiration from the work of Josef Hoffman will guide participants toward unusual, interesting, and stimulating artistic approaches.
The fashion show of non-traditional and original graduate works from SUPŠ Jihlava-Helenín, created under the guidance of MgA. Miloslava Svobodová, head of the study program Modeling and Clothing Design, is sure to find its supporters. The models, which represent the relationship between ornament and textiles and clothing, were presented at competitive shows Green Design (Styl and Kabo, Brno) and Junior Styl (Prague Fashion Week, Prague). The fashion show will be followed by a visual projection of fashion designs created in the Wiener Werkstätte studio in the first third of the 20th century.
Throughout the museum night, blacksmith masters from the Brtnické Kovadliny symposium will present their art, which is running until June 24 under the auspices of the governor of the Vysočina region and the town of Brtnice. The entire event will also be accompanied by dancing entertainment. The culmination of the night will be a solemn walk to the Brtnice cemetery to the grave of Hoffman’s parents.

Throughout the museum night, blacksmith masters from the Brtnické Kovadliny symposium will present their art.
In the shop of the Birthplace of Josef Hoffman, there will be a special discount on publications with artistic themes valid only for this night.
The event is organized by the Moravian Gallery in Brno.

The fifth international meeting of artistic blacksmiths is taking place in the courtyard of the Birthplace of Josef Hoffman at the castle in Brtnice. Blacksmiths will demonstrate their work at the forge and anvil, blacksmithing exhibits will be displayed, and a rich accompanying program is prepared. The event is organized by the Civic Association “Brtnické Kovadliny” under the auspices of the governor of the Vysočina region and the town of Brtnice.
