Brno – The Museum of the City of Brno will close the Měnínská Gate due to poor technical condition. Currently, there is a permanent exhibition of toys located there, which can only be viewed until the end of the year. The monumentally protected building, with a history dating back to the 13th century, is the last preserved gate of the former city fortifications.

"Recently, the engineering networks in the building have deteriorated rapidly, the sewage system is in very poor condition. Therefore, we want to proceed with the reconstruction as quickly as possible," said museum spokesman Michael Kalábek to ČTK today. More than 40 years have passed since the last complete renovation.

Next spring, museum staff will begin exploratory work at the Měnínská Gate to determine the extent of the damage. They will also prepare a project for the repairs.

"After the reconstruction, we will use the Měnínská Gate again as an exhibition space, but we are still discussing plans for its specific function," Kalábek noted.

Local residents must say goodbye to the permanent exhibition of the Toy Museum, which has been in the Měnínská Gate for ten years, at the end of this year. It includes 3,500 toys from the collection of Brno artist Milada Kollárová.

The fortifications of Brno originally had five gates – besides Měnínská, there were also Běhounská, Brněnská, Veselá, and Židovská. Only fragments of the walls have been preserved, for example, in Husova Street and around Petrov.
