Liberec - A center for ecological education for families with children, called the Water House, will be established on the site of the former military shooting range in the Liberec district of Harcov. The project has been prepared by the company Suchopýr, which has also obtained grants from European funds for it. The revitalization of the dilapidated and dangerous area of the former shooting range will cost nearly 37 million crowns. The area is expected to be opened to the public in the summer of next year. The project's author, architect Ladislav David, stated this to reporters today.
For Suchopýr, the ecological education center project is not the first similar initiative. The company, which has been operating in the Liberec region since 1997, runs the Ecological Education Center of the Liberec Region (STŘEVLIK) among other services in Oldřichov in Hájích. "The Water House project was created based on our experiences with the eco-center in Oldřichov, which is primarily designed for one-day or multi-day residential ecological education programs for kindergartens, primary, and secondary schools," said Martin Dušek from Suchopýr. According to him, the Liberec center will be an expansion of the services offered in Oldřichov and will be thematically focused on water.
The former military shooting range was established in the valley of the Černý potok stream in Liberec as early as the end of the 19th century. In the 1980s, the original stream was channeled into a pipe, and a service building was constructed above it. However, for more than 20 years, the area has not been used, has become overgrown with invasive plants and bushes, and the buildings are dilapidated and at risk of collapse. Suchopýr aims to bring the area as close as possible to its natural state. "A new service facility will be built on the foundations of the original building; next to it, a water reservoir will be created, and there will be a stream with water attractions for children on the property," David described the plan. The entire area is intended to serve not only for ecological education but also for the recreation of Liberec residents.
The former military land of the Harcov shooting range belongs to a private owner, with whom Suchopýr has signed a lease agreement for fifty years. "The project is definitely positive for the city - it addresses one of Liberec's brownfields. The integrated development plan of the city included two similar ecological projects, but ultimately only this one could be realized," added Michal Vereščák from the city's development department. Suchopýr has been promised up to 85 percent of the costs from the Integrated Urban Development Program, with the remaining 15 percent to be covered by the organization itself.
