Pardubice - Pardubice are preparing extensive modifications to Republic Square, which aim to limit transit traffic and improve the appearance of the city center. The city will implement the transformation in stages over several years. Preparatory work will begin this summer or fall with the relocation of engineering networks. This was stated by Mayor Jan Nadrchal (ANO).

"Architects are approaching the transformation of Republic Square very sensitively, considering that it contains buildings from various historical periods, from the oldest to modern structures. The proposal is also being consulted with their owners," said Nadrchal.

According to the proposal, the center is to gradually transform into a calmer space with a greater share of greenery and recreational areas. "We want to open the historic city center to people and regulate traffic so that it utilizes alternative routes. The center is ceasing to serve a transit function," said Deputy Mayor Jan Hrabal (ANO).

The square will partially return to the time of its inception when it was not burdened by traffic; as a result, it will serve pedestrians and cyclists more. To this end, the city will remove two above-ground entrances to the underpass, which it wants to eliminate because it has been closed for a long time due to its poor condition. The plan also includes the refurbishment of sidewalks and the unification of materials, a water feature, and a work of art.

Documentation for the construction permit has currently been completed, and the next phase of project preparation is underway. The goal is to limit car traffic, modify crosswalks, change the layout of public transport stops, and plant greenery, including trees. For example, there should no longer be a small parking lot in front of the Grand shopping center, but a larger restaurant terrace and more space for pedestrians.

Not all proposals are liked by the councilors. The opposition, for example, criticizes that all bus stops will be in the traffic lane and will not have bays. They fear that this will slow down personal traffic.
