Nový Bor - Náměstí Míru in the center of Nový Bor in the Českolipsko region will be closed for traffic and pedestrians for six months starting Monday due to reconstruction. For 26.4 million crowns, it will undergo a complete transformation from today's parking area into a relaxation spot with benches and mature trees. This was reported today by the spokeswoman for the town hall, Radmila Pokorná.
"Of the approximately 90 current parking spaces, about half will remain. The loss will be compensated by a new parking lot at the intersection of T. G. M. and Wolkerova streets," said Pokorná. After the works are completed, a new artistic element evoking an open glass form will dominate the square.
During the reconstruction, the central square of the town will only be passable for pedestrians around the so-called Lužické houses. "In addition to prohibiting parking, the intersection to Kalinova Street between the Glass Museum and the primary school will also be closed for the necessary time during which new networks and surfaces are laid. It should be passable at the latest by the start of the school year," said the head of the city development department, Miroslav Jeništa.
Nový Bor, with its 12,000 inhabitants, is the fifth largest town in the Liberec Region. The reconstruction of the square is the final stage of the revitalization of the historical center. In previous stages, the appearance of the park in front of the town hall, Kalinova Street, and the area in front of the so-called Lužické houses was changed. The central area of the square, approximately 5,000 square meters in size, is expected to gain a more attractive appearance. The most expensive part will be the restoration of the roads, which will cost almost 16 million crowns. Among other things, workers will have to replace two kilometers of curbs. New will also be the networks, utilities, public lighting, and furniture. "Only natural materials approved by the National Heritage Institute will be used. The public lighting style will meet its requirements, just as was the case in previous stages of the restoration of the historical center of the town. A unified style of furniture will also be maintained," added Jeništa.
The reconstruction of the square will be paid for by the town hall primarily from a loan, having borrowed 25 million crowns from the bank. "In previous stages, we managed to save from our own budget. However, this investment is high now; therefore, we will take an investment loan for a period of seven years," clarified the deputy mayor of Nový Bor, Stanislava Silná (Starostové). The town does not have to draw the entire loan and can repay it early without the risk of penalties.
