Proposals for a new park under Hády in Brno will be in mid-year

Brno - Teplárny Brno expect architectural proposals for a new park in Brno under the Hády hill to arrive by June. An expert commission will then decide on them. A space for leisure activities for the residents of Brno will be created at the site, said Petr Fajmon, the general director of Teplárny Brno, to reporters today.

According to him, it is not possible to say in advance what the place will look like; that will be decided based on the proposals that will be submitted in the competition. "The concept is quite broad, but there should not be any permanent structures," Fajmon stated.

There are complicated restitution issues related to the land at the site. Descendants of the Kohn family, who operated brickworks in Brno in the first half of the 20th century and had other activities, have requested the land. The restitutions, which began in the 1990s, have not yet been resolved. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the family’s legal representative is from New York. The heating plant has preliminarily agreed with him that if the park on the disputed land does not contain any permanent structures, the family will not cause problems in the construction process. This means that recreational elements, paths, playgrounds, and similar features can be created at the site.

The area is neglected. The heating plant once dumped ash from the Špitálka facility there. It will be necessary to clear out invasive trees from the site. "It is expected that the shrubs will be harvested, chipped, and burned. We would utilize them energetically, which would mean a revenue of up to one million crowns," Fajmon stated.

Students will propose the final design of the area. Then a feasibility study will follow, and implementation will likely be co-financed by the city. The idea for the redevelopment of the neglected area between the Vinohrady and Líšeň housing estates came from co-founder of Studentské Brno, Tomáš Viktořík. The planned park is expected to cover 21 hectares, which is one hectare more than the largest park in Brno, Lužánky.
