Pec pod Sněžkou (Trutnovsko) - The Dutch company Middle Europe Investments wants to transform the Krkonošsko resort Pec pod Sněžkou into a modern town with an investment of one billion crowns. In the center of the resort, it plans to build a new square with an underground parking lot, a town hall, a hotel, shops, and recreational facilities. This was stated by today's Mladá fronta Dnes in the supplement for the Hradec Králové region. "We have a unique opportunity to build a new town practically from scratch in collaboration with a strong investor. We should not waste it," believes Pec Mayor Alan Tomášek. However, he admitted that the decision-making regarding the investor's proposal will not be easy. "If there is significant opposition to the plan or if any insurmountable problems arise, construction will not take place," he said. Already, some council members are opposed to the investment. In the case of an agreement, the town will provide the investor with part of the municipal land, and in return, he will give the town hall spaces valued at approximately 110 million crowns - a new town hall, a new square, part of the underground and outdoor parking spaces, and a shop. The company will retain a hotel, accommodation capacities in 13 new buildings, and areas for commercial use. The investor also offers a mountain tram to the ski resort or a cogwheel cable car at the site of the current access lift. Construction could start in 2010 or 2011 and would last about three years. Middle Europe Investments already owns and manages around 40 properties in attractive locations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with a market value of around three billion crowns. Last year, for example, it purchased buildings from Centerprojekt in Zlín and the site of two administrative buildings of Kupra in Prague's Karlín. The company is also engaged in trading on stock exchanges and restructuring industrial enterprises.
