Brno - The history of Brno's pubs, restaurants, bars, and wine cellars is documented in a new publication titled Would you like a beer or a glass of wine? The publishing house Josef Filip has so far released the first volume, which describes the city center. More will follow, said the owner of the publishing house, Vladimír Filip, to ČTK today.

Publisher Filip has long focused on publishing illustrated books. He draws from his extensive collection of postcards and photographs. The book also includes period snapshots from the estates of restaurant owners. For example, the publication gives a very detailed presentation of the Stopka beer cellar on Czech Street in the city center, where Czech high society gathered.

In addition to period postcards, the book contains drawings by Leopold Mazur, who has long researched the history of Brno hospitality. Readers will also find period advertisements promoting brands of beer that the pubs served. For example, another inn on today's Czech Street run by restaurateur Čeňek Ambrož "always served well-aged Brejch beer, as well as healthy natural wine." The restaurateur further added that delicious food was always taken care of.

Publisher Filip does not yet know how many volumes the mapping of Brno's pubs and restaurants will take. The second volume, which will describe Pisárky and Špilberk, is already nearing completion. "The volume will, for example, cover the development of the famous restaurant Myslivna and the history of military canteens on Špilberk," Filip stated. Volumes dedicated to individual city districts will follow. "I believe that the topic will interest people; I think readers are inclined towards restaurants," Filip mentioned.

The publishing house Josef Filip, established in 1938 and named after the father of the current owner, has long been engaged in publishing illustrated books. In the past, Karel Altman extensively mapped the history of Brno's restaurants with his book Tavernous Brno, which was published more than 20 years ago.
