Nový Jičín - Nový Jičín has completed the renovation of one of the most valuable buildings in the city, a Renaissance house from 1563 known as the Old Post Office. The building has a new façade, and the roof, trusses, and plumbing elements have also been reconstructed. The repair cost nearly 3.2 million crowns. The city has also renovated another valuable building, located at Divadelní Street 1, which houses the city hall. The construction work there came to almost 5.7 million crowns. This was reported today by the spokesperson for the Nový Jičín town hall, Marie Machková.
The Old Post Office is home to the Exhibition Hall Old Post Office, the Galerka club, and Coffeemusicbar. The house, with two-story arcade loggias on the first and second floors, has been preserved in practically the same form as it was built in the 16th century by mayor Ondřej Řepa. According to the city, it is a unique example of advanced Renaissance architecture in the urban environment of the Czech lands. “The interior underwent plaster repairs, floors, doors, and windows were restored, and new windows were installed in the attic. Beyond the original plans, the front pillars of the building had to be statically secured,” said Machková.
The building underwent a major reconstruction in the 1970s when office spaces were created in the attic. “Unfortunately, after uncovering the masonry, it was discovered that the condition of the steel reinforcements of the pillars was unsatisfactory. The structural engineer proposed to replace the reinforcements with steel rods, which had to be inserted into horizontal milled grooves and drilled holes. Local repairs of missing masonry and internal strengthening by pressure injection were also carried out,” stated Michal Hub from the municipal department of property, development, and investments.
At the building on Divadelní Street, the builders removed cracks from the façade and painted the plaster and roof. The sculpture with the attic and the entrance portal from Tyršova Street were restored. “The relatively large and complex building was constructed at the end of the 19th century according to the design of the Viennese architect Otto Thienemann. Some interior spaces are adorned with paintings by Eduard Veith,” said Barbora Kaštovská from the education department. In the past, the building housed the regional court and district office.
Renovations in the buildings were carried out while both the office and the cultural facility were in operation. Both received subsidies: for the Old Post Office, it was 700,000 crowns from the Ministry of Culture, and for the building on Divadelní Street, 350,000 crowns from the Moravian-Silesian region.
