Jablonec nad Nisou - A new artistic element made of dichroic glass has colorfully enlivened the gray facade of the extension of the Glass and Costume Jewelry Museum in Jablonec nad Nisou. Thanks to daylight, the color of the extension facade, also referred to as Pelant's staircase, changes throughout the day, museum director Milada Valečková told ČTK today.
"What we see there is that in the morning it is blue, then red and purple are added, and there are also yellow reflections. So throughout the day, every moment, the facade looks different. Not to mention that the trees in the park and the greenery are beautifully reflected in the glass. It looks really interesting, though I won't say that everyone will like it. Definitely not," Valečková said.
The museum selected the new artistic element for the 60-year-old concrete extension from nine proposals. The competition was won by a design from Tereza Šváchová of the architectural studio uncut, where several plates of dichroic glass are placed on the facade. These selectively reflect different wavelengths while allowing others to pass through. At first glance, colorless glass can change colors and reflect multiple shades depending on the angle of view and surrounding lighting conditions.
"The facade, as it is now modified, personally reminds me a lot of the original mosaic that was in those fillings," Valečková stated. She believes that due to the new artistic element, the previously gray facade has become interesting. "It is not so uniform, but throughout the day, the light and glass interact," she added.
