Liberec - Liberec Hospice, the castle in Svijany, or the historic granaries in Černousy are among the candidates for the title of Building of the Year in the Liberec Region. The expert jury is already visiting the entered buildings, and the public can also participate in the decision-making process through a specially created website www.stavbarokulibereckehokraje.cz, which provides an overview of all submissions. The building that receives the most votes from the public will receive the Prize of Sympathy, said the spokesperson for the regional office, Markéta Dědková, to ČTK today.
The competition for Building of the Year is being held for the twelfth time this year in the Liberec Region, with 12 buildings entered. "I am glad that this year's edition features such diverse works, which are located in all parts of the region. We have already performed a check of the formal requirements of all nominations and categorized them into five categories that have been announced this year,” stated regional councilor and jury chairman Vít Příkaský (ČSSD). In the final stage, the jury will assign points to the buildings, determine the category winners, and propose an award for the overall winner. The ceremonial announcement is planned for the beginning of September.
Among the most well-known nominated buildings is undoubtedly the hospice, which was ceremonially opened in January this year in Liberec by President Miloš Zeman. The reconstruction of the orphanage from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries into a modern facility for 28 incurably ill patients cost 109 million crowns, most of which was covered by the European Union. The castle in Svijany has also undergone reconstruction. The dilapidated monument was purchased three years ago by the nearby Svijany Brewery, which has already invested 60 million in its restoration with the help of so-called Norwegian funds.
The granaries of Zámecký Dvor in Černousy in the Liberec Region are also a reconstructed monument. The courtyard has been under reconstruction since 2010. The granaries, which were completed last year, are octagonal buildings with a diameter of about 20 meters. Their height corresponds to a two-story space. According to heritage protectors, these buildings are completely unique in the Czech environment. The title of Building of the Year is also contested by the newly constructed sports and recreational area Maškova Zahrada in Turnov, the reconstructed mountain road from Bedřichov to Hrabětice, or the insulation of the kindergarten and primary school Loučná in Hrádek nad Nisou.
