Brno - Brno can proceed with the preparation for the renewal of the tram line from Stránská skála to Líšeň, as the project has successfully passed the assessment of the building's impact on the environment. This follows from the conclusions of the preliminary examination, which are available on the EIA Information Portal. Construction is scheduled for next year or in 2019. The first trams could be back in operation in 2020.
Traffic on the line ceased more than 50 years ago. The renewal of the practically non-existent line on the former railway bed will cost between 400 and 450 million crowns.
The city will use money from European funds for the construction, covering 85 percent of the costs. The line will serve the old part of Líšeň and will also support new planned developments. After regular transport ended in the 1960s, the Technical Museum in Brno used one track to transport exhibits, as there is a depot for trams and other railway vehicles on Holzova street. Since 2002, the line has been completely impassable and has been deteriorating.
On the more than three-kilometer section, three stops are currently planned. The Stránská skála stop will be new. Additionally, there will be stops at U proluky and a final stop at the Transport Museum, from which there will be an easy transfer to a bus.
People from the adjacent Holzova street were concerned about an increase in noise, so a several dozen-meter-long noise barrier will be built. At the same time, the surrounding area will be modified to ensure that the tram does not create a new barrier. Initially, only an extended line 10 will run on the line, every ten minutes during peak hours.
The construction will also include a one-year reconstruction of the line to Stránská skála, which branches off from the line to Mifkovu.
Brno has been preparing new tram lines for years; this one should surpass all others since it is officially only a renewal. Gradually, the line from Dornych to Plotní street will also be relocated, a branch to the Bohunice campus will be constructed, and the continuation of the line in Bystrc to Kamechy. The extension of the tram to Lesná from Štefánikova district is further off in terms of timeline.
