Prague - The reconstruction of Prague's Malostranské Square could begin next year. The city management is currently negotiating minor adjustments to the project. In response to a query from ČTK, Deputy Mayor Petr Hlaváček (for TOP 09) said today. The square will be reconstructed according to the project of architects Martin Hájek, Václav Hájek, and Petr Horský. In 2016, the city removed parking spaces from the square and attempted to organize cultural events there, but without greater public interest.
"We have the project, the building permit, and we are still discussing with local people the possibility of adding two trees to Malostranské Square," said Hlaváček.
According to the deputy, the original project did not account for the fact that there is actually a lot of noise in the square, especially from trams. It is therefore not possible to project films or organize concerts here. Furthermore, people tend to gather primarily under the one tree that grows in the square, leaving the rest of the square unused. This, according to him, needs to be addressed.
According to the project, there will be fewer parking spaces in the square and, conversely, more seating areas. A fountain and another artistic element will also be added, and the entire area is to be unified. The city hall also plans to restrict car traffic in the square, with the removal of lanes for cars in favor of pedestrians in the lower part. Part of Nerudova Street in front of the church will be transformed into a pedestrian and recreational zone, and a crosswalk will be added at Malostranská Beseda. There should also be more space for pedestrians at the corner of Mostecká Street.
