Prague - The reconstruction of the National Avenue station of the Prague metro is nearing its final phase. Workers will soon begin installing wall tiles on the platform. New escalators are also nearing completion. The station is set to reopen at the beginning of July after a two-year closure, said Jiří Pařízek, the city's transportation councilor from TOP 09, to ČTK today. In the past, people from the surrounding area protested due to the metro's closure, as the station was one of the most frequented.

However, according to Pařízek, the construction of the multifunctional building Quadrio, previously referred to as Copa Center, which stands above the station, is not likely to be completed by July. Therefore, passengers will exit the station using escalators to the basement of the building, from where they will take further escalators to emerge at the corner of Spálená and Purkyňova streets. By that time, the building's facade is expected to be completed, ensuring a safe exit, Pařízek stated. The entrance through the shopping complex will remain closed for now.
According to Pařízek, the station was affected by flooding in 2002, making a thorough reconstruction necessary. The costs will exceed 380 million crowns, with 87 million covered by the investor of the shopping center.
Workers have already finished repairing the supports and walls in the station, and they have also prepared the structures to which the cladding will be attached. "We are following the original architectural project, which had a golden concept. This means we are continuing with the original yellow color," said Pařízek.
Most of the escalators to the basement of Quadrio have already been installed. They are 63 meters long, contain 304 moving steps, and weigh 45 tons. According to the general director of the transport company, Jaroslav Ďuriš, they meet European standards and will therefore be slower than the original Russian escalators.
Quadrio is being built by the CPI Group, which purchased it from the Copa Centrum Národní company some time ago. The costs are expected to amount to 3.3 billion crowns. The building will have four underground and eight above-ground floors. It will consist of a total of six buildings, five office towers, and a standalone residential building. It will include offices, retail space, and luxury apartments. The construction is expected to be completed this autumn.
Before the station opens, the tram tracks on Lazarská Street will also be repaired, allowing wheelchair users to access the station via an elevator. A new pavement will be laid on the street, and the traffic regime will be changed. Trams standing at the stop will block the passage for cars, making boarding for passengers safer.
The transport company is also planning to reconstruct other metro stations. This year, the station Chodov is expected to be completed while remaining in operation, with lights being replaced and technical spaces modified. At the end of the year, the transport company is preparing a significant reconstruction of the Museum A station, which was also damaged by the flood. Due to the extensive repairs, trains will only stop at one platform at a time. Passengers from the opposite direction will have to travel one more station further and return on the next train.
This year, the transport company also aims to prepare a project for the modernization of the Dejvická, Jinonice, Skalka, and Opatov stations.
