Varnsdorf - Varnsdorf in the Děčín region is seeking a contractor for the long-planned reconstruction of the square. The town hall is evaluating the selection process, and the contract is expected to be signed at the beginning of next year, when construction modifications will also begin. The primary requirement of the city with a population of about fourteen thousand is to create a dignified center. The square currently serves as a parking lot, but after the renovation, it should again be a place for locals to meet and spend their free time. City architect Jan Hrouda informed ČTK about this today.

Markets and social and cultural events will be held in the square. The city center will not lose parking spaces; they will be located around the perimeter of the area. Planned features include tree planting, new benches, and lighting, Hrouda stated.

The dominant feature of the entire space will be a water element. Given the significance of the site, the city has decided to seek its design in the most transparent way possible, by holding an official public architectural and artistic competition for the first time in modern history.

"It will be a four-meter-wide bronze bowl, a cone sunk into the ground," the architect described the appearance of the new fountain. Its function will not only be to enliven the space but also to cool it on hot summer days. One of its modes will have the same function as the increasingly popular misting systems.

The project also includes so-called green infrastructure. Rainwater from the roofs of the church, the rectory, and the square will flow into underground reservoirs. The city will use the collected water for watering plants, shrubs, and flowers not only in the square but also in front of the nearby primary school and the city hall building.

Adjustments to the access roads to the square are also planned. The roads will be made of granite cobblestones, will be narrower, and parking bays will be created on them.

Construction work could begin in the first months of 2026, depending on the weather, and is expected to last for a year.
