Ostrava - The city of Ostrava will take over the historic city slaughterhouse and the former Bauhaus DIY store on Thursday, which it purchased for 80 million crowns. Both buildings will serve cultural purposes. The building of the former store is expected to be relocated to the City Gallery Plato next spring, Mayor Tomáš Macura (ANO) said today to journalists.

The original slaughterhouse building in the city center was established in 1881. However, in 1994, the municipal district of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz sold the two-hectare land, along with the slaughterhouse building, to Bauhaus for over 38 million crowns. The company built its DIY store in close proximity to the slaughterhouse. However, the slaughterhouse fell into disrepair and was never renovated, and the store is no longer in operation. The city has long sought to reclaim the protected historical slaughterhouse.

"We should take over the keys to both properties and physically take them over. The next steps will be that for the DIY store, we already have a selected designer who will begin work. Within two months, they should complete the project for the modifications to the building so that it meets the needs for the gallery's relocation," Macura stated.

Regarding the historic slaughterhouse building, he said, the city initially waits for a structural assessment to be conducted. "Our intention remains to use the building for art purposes, likely for gallery purposes including outdoor space, and our ambition is for it to be of a high standard. This means we want to invite two to three renowned architectural offices, including those with international experience, to develop and present their project, their conceptual proposal, and then we would decide on one of them. Based on that, further phases of project documentation would be developed," Macura added.

According to the latest expert assessment, the value of the complex exceeds 90 million crowns. For the slaughterhouse, it is expected that renovation costs will exceed 100 million crowns, while the modifications of the former DIY store have already been estimated by the mayor to be in the range of several million crowns.
