Ostrava will present architectural designs for a parking garage

Ostrava – The city will exhibit all architectural designs for a parking garage, which will be located near the House of Culture of the City of Ostrava. The city selected its design through an architectural competition that garnered considerable interest, receiving 42 proposals. This was announced to journalists today by the spokesperson of the city hall, Andrea Vojkovská.

"All proposals respected the important conditions from the assignment, the completion of the street space, and the preservation of connectivity to the neighboring property. The jury praised the winning design for allowing the new building to stand out next to some neighboring, somewhat awkward-looking structures while being sensitively and respectfully integrated into the local area," stated Mayor Tomáš Macura (ANO).

The exhibition of designs will be open from Thursday, every weekday at the MAPPA studio located at Nádražní Street 17. The opening with a discussion will take place on Wednesday at 5:00 PM.

The winner of the competition was Projektstudio EUCZ. "Personally, I wanted the building to be as little of a box for cars as possible, to be a playful mirror of the rigid structures around, while also projecting the logic of parking. We used all possible and impossible forms of expression for this. I look forward to working with the structural engineer, because I hope we can create the largest console with such a load in the world. I want my beloved Ostrava to be on the map of world architecture. This was also an impulse for us to push ourselves towards this design," said architect David Kotek from the winning studio.

The parking garage will be built in a busy location in a gap opposite the House of Culture of the City of Ostrava. The capacity of the parking garage will be 600 spaces. Construction is expected to begin in 2022. The estimated costs are 435 million.

There has been a long-term shortage of parking spaces for residents, as well as employees and visitors to the institutions located there. In addition to this parking garage, the city plans to start building another one opposite the city hospital later this year. The city is also currently preparing a competition for a parking garage to be located behind the cathedral in the center of Ostrava.
