Lednice - Heritage officials want to select a company by the end of the year that will repair the facades of the Lednice Castle in the Břeclav region, which is one of the most visited historical sites in the Czech Republic. A tender for the project has already been held once: repairs were supposed to be completed by the end of 2008 for 180 million crowns. However, the new management of the heritage institute believes that the amount is too high. Therefore, the process will be repeated.
"It really seems that the amount is large. However, it must be taken into account that it concerns the facades of the entire building. The project also includes the repair of hundreds of windows, which are in a deplorable state," said today to ČTK the castle steward Ivana Holásková. The modifications will employ not only plasterers but also stonemasons and restorers.
If a construction contractor is indeed selected this year, work could likely begin next year. It is expected to last approximately three years. It is already clear that it will be one of the financially most demanding construction projects related to heritage care in Moravia.
The results of the tender for the facade repair of the castle were canceled at the beginning of this year. According to the current management of the South Moravian heritage institute, it is possible that the new tender will save millions of crowns. However, some experts believe that the amount of 180 million is not exaggerated and corresponds to the complexity of the work.
Lednice Castle is one of the historical architectural jewels of Central Europe. The massive structure is set in a landscape styled as an English park. There are additional monuments adjacent to the castle. The castle and its immediate surroundings are visited by about half a million tourists annually.
