Brno - The Holocaust memorial, designed by painter Daniel Václavík, will cost 3.7 million crowns and will be located in the 28th of October Square in Brno from the autumn of next year. The city council approved the contract for the project on Wednesday, said Deputy Mayor Jana Bohuňovská (ODS) to journalists today. The memorial will consist of a cube placed in a shallow pool of water, with water cascading down the sides of the cube as a symbol of purification and forgiveness. At the bottom of the pool, there will be text in Czech, Hebrew, and Romani.

The memorial will be situated in the park near the city center. "The city's motive was to contribute through a contemporary artistic work reflecting the consequences of the darkest chapter of our modern history and the failures of 20th-century civilization, to repay the debt to all victims of Nazi racial persecution,” stated the spokesman of the city hall, Pavel Žára, regarding the memorial's creation.
This year, some people protested against the proposed memorial; for example, architect Lubomír Hruška pointed out that it strikingly resembles a memorial to police officers fallen in service in Minnesota, USA. The city hall commissioned an expert opinion, which stated that Václavík's design is not a plagiarism. The American memorial is in the shape of a rectangular prism, while the Brno one is a cube. Its dimensions will be 3.14 meters. According to the city hall, the chosen dimension, that is, the number pi, is meant to evoke the continuously recurring human suffering throughout history with its infinite progression.
