Brno - The Brno city council today approved the winning design for a Holocaust memorial. The expert jury selected the proposal by academic painter Daniel Václavík, which consists of a black cube and the inscription "Let us not forget." The memorial is set to be erected in the 28th of October Square next year. All designs were exhibited at the Old Town Hall, and the public was able to express their opinions in a poll. CTK was informed of the competition results by the spokesperson for the city magistrate, Pavel Žára.

"The motivation for announcing the competition was the city of Brno's leadership's effort to contribute through a contemporary artistic work reflecting the consequences of the darkest chapter of our modern history and the failures of 20th-century civilization, to pay a debt to all victims of Nazi racial persecution," Žára stated regarding the competition.
Authors of the designs placed in the top three positions received financial rewards, with the first place earning 100,000 crowns. The estimated value of the entire competition is 3.9 million crowns. The memorial was to be designed so that commemorative acts could be held nearby in the future.
A public competition was held in Brno two years ago, but at that time, the city council did not approve any design.
