Pardubice – Kaňkův hall in the Pardubice castle, modified in the 18th century during preparations for the unsuccessful coronation of Charles VI as King of Bohemia, is awaiting renovation costing 6.8 million crowns. Its technical condition already restricts the organization of exhibitions. The work will include the restoration of technical utilities, heating, flooring, electrical installations, and security systems, stated the Pardubice region in a press release.
"We have set aside part of the castle for social purposes, but it is also important for the museum to have quality exhibition spaces for organizing short-term and exchange exhibitions. This year we want to prepare the project documentation, and next year we could start the actual reconstruction. At the same time, the roof above the Kaňkův hall will also be repaired according to the already prepared project documentation," said regional councilor Roman Línek (Coalition for Pardubice Region).
The hall is located to the right of the entrance to the castle. It is named after the Czech Baroque architect František Maxmilián Kaňka. This imperial builder worked on the Pardubice castle from 1723 to 1726 during preparations for the planned coronation of Charles VI as King of Bohemia, which ultimately did not take place.
At that time, Kaňka made a number of Baroque modifications to the castle interiors. It was also in 1726 that he renovated the large hall on the ground floor of the northwest corner of the castle, which now serves as the exhibition space of the East Bohemian Museum.
The Pardubice castle was created at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries when the Pernštejn family rebuilt it from the original fortress into a representative Renaissance residence. The Pardubice region continues to repair the monument for tens of millions of crowns, completing a social hall with a glass spiral staircase, designed by Eva Jiřičná and her team. They are also working on a new visitor center, which will include a natural science exhibition.
