Brno – The Brno-sever municipality is preparing project documentation for an extensive reconstruction of the Maria Restituta Park. The work is expected to take place in the coming years and will cost tens of millions of crowns. This was announced to journalists today by the municipal councilor Marie Kselíková.
The project includes landscaping adjustments to pathways. "They will be suitable for wheelchair users. Currently, they are not suitable for wheelchair users. At the same time, the project will address the issue of heavy rainfall. The roads will have interrupted gutters that will direct water into green areas or infiltration trenches," Kselíková stated.
According to her, the consequence of heavy rainfall is the washed-out soil on Hálková and Elgartova Streets. After the adjustments, the pathways in the park will be barrier-free, and the stairs leading to the upper path will be replaced with a wheeled staircase that will also serve for strollers. The park is expected to have a statue of Maria Restituta in the future.
Maria Restituta Park is located on the site of the old Husovice cemetery, which was closed in 1962. After the exhumation of the remains, it was transformed into a public park in 1983 and received its name in 1999 in honor of the Husovice native Helena Kafka, who took the religious name Maria Restituta as a nun. She dedicated her life to caring for the poor and sick. During the occupation, she sacrificed her life for her ideals, and as the only nun, she was executed by the Nazis. In 1990, Pope John Paul II declared her blessed.
