Brno – The second phase of the revitalization of Marie Restituty Park in the Brno district of Husovice will begin on Tuesday. The work will last until May next year and will restrict access through the park for four months. It primarily involves the adjustment of pathways in the central part. Their routes will change to make the extremely steep sections more gentle. The upper staircase will be replaced by a main pathway, and in addition, a wooden walkway will be created among the linden trees, which will open a new route and connect previously neglected areas. The costs amount to 12 million crowns, said the deputy mayor of the Brno-sever district, Martin Glogar (KDU-ČSL), to reporters today.
The project by the team of architect Eva Wagner also includes new entrances to the park from Elgartova and Rotalova streets. "The accesses will consist of low, comfortable steps bordered by a brick structure with a handrail. The steps will be complemented by a ramp for strollers and bicycles, making the park accessible to everyone. The main pedestrian path, leading from Rotalova to Provazníkova, will now be made of smooth brushed concrete with guiding lines for the visually impaired," said Glogar.
The most important component remains the historic linden alley, which divides the park into two parts. "To ensure the division does not appear too strict, we added a narrow wooden walkway into the alley that will gently hover above the ground while simultaneously reminding visitors of the original path leading to the historic cemetery," Glogar said. The district intends to carefully maintain the linden alleys and the majestic solitary ash trees, and in addition, it will plant several new trees and complement the area under the linden trees along the wooden path with lilies and daffodils.
Part of the revitalization also includes the construction of a memorial to the fallen in both world wars. The revitalization of Marie Restituty Park is also important to create a space suitable for placing a new statue of the blessed nun. Its unveiling and the opening of the renovated part of the park are planned by Brno-sever for May 1, the anniversary of the nun’s birth. From October 1 to November 30, and subsequently from March 1 to April 30, the park will be partially inaccessible. The last section of the park will remain unfinished, where in addition to restored greenery, a children's playground, a water feature, and a social space for potential cultural events are to be created. The district currently does not have funding for this phase.
Marie Restituty Park stands on the site of the old Husovice cemetery, which was closed in 1962. Above the cemetery, the Tišnov railway was later established, from which the original railway embankment towards the Husovice area has survived to this day. In 1983, the space was converted into a public park and in 1999 it was named after the Husovice-born Helena Kafková, who adopted the religious name Maria Restituta as a nun. She dedicated her life to caring for the poor and the sick. The district had the upper part of the park repaired years ago at the site of the former Tišnov railway.
