Pardubice - After five years, the repairs of Pardubice crematorium have been completed, the first Czech facility that provided cremation services. The rondocubist structure, inspired by folk architecture, is one of the most well-known buildings of its kind in the country. The repairs cost nearly 19 million crowns. The builders restored the unusual facade and modified the internal layout. This was stated today by the spokesperson of the City Services of Pardubice, Světlana Pozníková.
Although, according to the spokesperson, it is a gem of Pardubice architecture from the 1920s, it was necessary to partially change the interiors to meet modern requirements. In the first phase, among other things, a new small ceremonial hall with a waiting area was created.
"The most complicated step was the repair of the entrance stairs. Its statics were already in a critical state," said Pozníková.
In the next phase, the builders tackled the main ceremonial hall. Before the renovation, it was difficult for people with disabilities to access. Now a lift serves mourners. The attic has also been transformed, now serving musicians, speakers, and officiants. At the same time, a storage room for floral tributes was created, and new video and audio technology has been installed. The most expensive was the final phase of the facade restoration.
The crematorium has been owned by a city company since 1998. The building was designed by architect Pavla Janáka.
