PODĚBRADY (Nymburk Region) - A promenade is set to be created along the Elbe riverbank in Poděbrady, near the city center. The city has already commissioned a professional study, and ideally, work on transforming this area would begin at the end of this year and be completed in 2007, Mayor Jozef Ďurčanský told ČTK.

The planned promenade is to be located along part of the embankment that connects with the embankment below the castle and ends near Na Vinici Street. Currently, there is an asphalt path for cyclists and rollerbladers, and a pedestrian promenade is being planned closer to the river in the location of the existing footpath.
Two children's playgrounds are also expected to be created here, and the surrounding greenery will undergo overall improvements. The study creators' plan includes the removal of hedges and unsuitable trees, adding benches, lighting, an informational system, and constructing a new pathway in a crushed stone finish.
Access to this area, which is close to the city center and the bridge over the Elbe, should also be improved. The authors of the study and the city leadership aim to utilize the strong recreational potential of this area, which is already used by many people for walks and sports activities.
However, according to the mayor, it is essential to complete the demanding approval process for the entire project and find funding for it. The project also needs to be adapted to other planned investments in the vicinity, including the planned extension of the city hall.
The enhancement and better utilization of attractive parts of the Elbe embankment near the city center is also being prepared by the Nymburk municipality under the city walls. Planned modifications here are expected to start this year and will likely take two to three years.
