Prague – Today, the reconstruction of the unused Art Nouveau building of the former school in V Olšinách street near the Strašnická metro station has begun, with the repair costing 312.8 million CZK. CTK was informed about this by the spokesperson for Prague 10, Jan Hamrník. The work will be carried out by the companies OHLA ŽS and Syner and will last approximately two years. After its completion, the building will once again serve as a primary school with a capacity of 360 students.
"We are working with the original layouts, and interventions into the preserved structures will be minimal. The children can look forward to twelve classroom spaces, and there will be a dining hall with its own kitchen," stated the councilor for Prague 10, Olga Koumarová. She added that next to the school, a multifunctional sports field with a low stand will be created, along with new paths, trees, and relaxation areas in the adjacent park.
An elevator will be added to the building to ensure accessibility for the school. The building has been a cultural monument since 2014, so the construction companies will cooperate with heritage protectors during the reconstruction. The city hall has been preparing the reconstruction for several years. According to previous information, the municipal district should receive a grant from the magistrate of 80 million crowns for the work.
Previously, the leadership of Prague 10 considered moving the municipal office into the building, but ultimately decided to repair the existing town hall on Vršovická street.
Prague is facing a shortage of places in schools and kindergartens, which particularly affects the suburban districts, as well as more central areas such as Prague 5 or Prague 10. The city council of the tenth district previously stated that, in connection with demographic forecasts, it will be necessary to develop further expansion projects for schools in Zahradní Město, Vršovice, and Malešice. Last year, the council began constructing a new kindergarten on Bajkalská street.
According to the population count, Prague 10 is the second largest Prague municipal district after Prague 4, with approximately 110,000 residents. It includes all of Vršovice, most of Strašnice and Malešice, and parts of Záběhlice, Michle, Vinohrady, Hrdlořezy, Hloubětín, and Žižkov.
