Prague - The Prague City Hall has a plan to build a racing circuit for Formula 1 races, which is set to be located in Prague's Strašnice district. The project, costing between 200 and 300 million euros (5.7 to 8.5 billion crowns), is expected to be financed by a currently undisclosed private investor. This was reported by TV Nova in today’s news, stating that details will be announced at a press conference on Monday, just a few days before the municipal elections.

The newspaper Sport had already reported about the track in the capital city on Saturday. According to the newspaper, the project was designed by the famous F1 circuit architect Hermann Tilke, who is expected to arrive in Prague next week. Antonín Charouz, the promoter of A1 GP and DTM races in Brno, did not provide details regarding Tilke's Prague program, only referring to the Monday press conference.
According to Nova, detailed plans for the construction of the circuit already exist. “There will be a press conference tomorrow, at which the project will be presented,” said Jiří Wolf, spokesperson for the city hall, to Nova. “Regarding the idea of Formula 1 in Prague, it is certainly an interesting concept. However, the budget of the City of Prague does not account for the support of such a project,” said Petr Hulinský (CSSD), the deputy mayor, to Nova.
Some opposition councilors disagree with the proposal. “Prague is so heavily indebted and really lacks the basic infrastructure that this is currently an unreasonable project,” said councilor Michael Hvížďala to Nova.
The intention of the private investor will be discussed by the Prague 10 city hall and the Prague city hall in the coming days. A final decision on the construction of the circuit should be made as soon as possible, Nova reported.
According to Sport, the track is expected to host A1 Grand Prix races, overseas Champ Car Formula expanding into Europe, and the international German championship of touring cars, DTM. After that, Formula 1 itself should follow. The newspaper also mentioned that the Czech Republic has two special racetracks in Brno and Most.
