Prague - The Prague City Hall has announced a public contract with an estimated value of 309 million crowns excluding VAT for the long-planned reconstruction of Jiří z Poděbrady Square. This was reported by ČTK based on the public procurement bulletin. The project for the modifications was prepared by Prague 3 after more than twenty years of discussions, and it was then taken over by the capital city. The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) will close the metro station at the square in mid-January for escalator repairs.

The project for the reconstruction of the square faced criticism from local residents in the past, which led the then-political representation of Prague 3 to stop it in the previous election period. The last city council decided to resume work on the project and agreed with the city hall that the city would take over the documentation upon completion and would be responsible for the modifications.

New trees are set to be planted in the square, and a larger area for public events will be created in front of the church. The proposal also includes improvements in irrigation and the enhancement of green areas, including the construction of a retention tank. Surfaces and street furniture will be repaired. The fountain located in front of the metro station, which the city hall had previously considered removing, will be preserved.

In September of the year before last, DPP began repairing the metro station at the square, which has been operating since 1980 without any major reconstruction. The work has not yet disrupted the operation of the station, but according to earlier information from the company, it will be necessary to close it from January 14 to November for the replacement of the escalators. New elevators for wheelchair users and parents with strollers will also be built in the station, and the company plans to put them into operation at the end of the second quarter of next year. The city hall has also been preparing modifications to Vinohradská Street for some time, which, according to earlier information, should begin next year after the work at the station is completed.
