Václav Hilský

Prague - 100 years ago, on September 6, 1909, the significant Czech architect and urban planner Václav Hilský was born. He came into the world in Valašské Meziříčí, where he also graduated from the Technical School for Wood Processing and then studied architecture at the Prague VŠUP under the pioneer of Czech modernism, Professor Otakar Novotný.
In his designs for residential and public buildings, he built upon the work of the functionalist interwar avant-garde. His work is extensive and can be found throughout the regions of Bohemia and Moravia. He is, for instance, the author or co-author of the Collective House in Litvínov, the new Lidice, the Sítná housing estate in Kladno, the Centrotex building in Prague's Náměstí Hrdinů, the department store in Rousínov, the housing estate in Poruba, cultural centers in Příbram and Kladno, and the memorial for the last shots of World War II in Slivice near Příbram.
He considered the solution and construction of the famous Litvínov Koldom, which he designed together with Evžen Linhart, to be the most beautiful period of his life, for which they received a gold medal at the triennale in Milan in 1946. The monumental complex, built between 1947 and 1958, is listed as a national technical monument in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic and currently serves as a hotel.
