Vienna/Prague - Ornament is a crime - this is perhaps the most quoted statement of the Austrian architect Adolf Loos, who died on August 23, 1933. The greatest stir was caused by this Brno native in 1911 when he placed a department store without a single decoration in close proximity to pompous historicist buildings in Vienna. Emperor Franz Joseph allegedly had the curtains drawn in some rooms of the Hofburg so he wouldn't have to look at that "horror." In addition to the Goldman and Salatsch department store, other significant buildings by Loos in Vienna include the Steiner House and Café Museum. The specificity of this architect was the so-called Raumplan, which means that the house was conceived as a single space with a flowing continuity and interconnection of its individual parts. Notable projects incorporating this concept include the house of Tristan Tzara in Paris and Müller Villa in Prague. Loos is also the author of several cafés and luxury shops (especially in Vienna), as well as apartments (for example, in Plzeň).
