The first Czech monograph of architect Hubert Gessner! The book focuses not only on Gessner's work in his hometown of Valašské Klobouky, but for the first time also consolidates the architect's work throughout the entire country and simultaneously offers the most comprehensive overview of the architect's activities outside the Czech lands.
Architect Hubert Gessner was born in Valašské Klobouky on October 20, 1871. From 1894 to 1898, he studied in the newly opened atelier of Otto Wagner at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Gessner is primarily known as one of the loyal students of Professor Otto Wagner and is also considered one of Wagner's most significant students. Already at the end of the first year of Wagner's specialized program, in June 1895, he designed a house for another Valašské Klobouky native and prominent Viennese businessman Josef Bratmann. The house was completed in August 1896: it is the very first Art Nouveau building in the territory of the Czech Republic. Gessner, regarded as one of the most significant Central European architects of the first half of the 20th century, realized four more buildings in his hometown. Anyone wishing to follow in the footsteps of Hubert Gessner throughout the Czech Republic today would visit eight cities and admire 15 construction projects: Liberec, Prague, Hradec Králové, Brno, Kroměříž, Nový Jičín, Opava, and Valašské Klobouky. A more extensive collection of Gessner’s works can be found primarily in Vienna and across Austria; after the war, Gessner became the chief architect for housing construction in Vienna – he was part of the architects of the so-called Red Vienna. He died in Vienna on January 29, 1943.
