Jihlava - The company PSJ has started the demolition of the former Štefánik barracks this week in Jihlava, with the oldest part dating back to the 19th century. This will make way for new residential buildings. The construction workers will dismantle the main barracks building along with a newer extension and the former infirmary on 17th November Street. A part of the adjoining wall will also be demolished, said Miroslav Fuks, the company's spokesperson, to ČTK today. The regional military command is preparing a new location for the stone sculpture, which is on the roof of the barracks above the main entrance.
The investor of the new residential complex Residence Vrchlického, whose first two buildings with 30 apartments will begin to be constructed on the site of the barracks from next spring, will be PSJ Investors CZ. It has stated that the old buildings are in poor condition. "That is why we decided not to postpone the start of demolition any longer and to take advantage of the suitable climatic period for this purpose," said Jiří Mutl, project manager of PSJ Investors CZ, in today's press release.
Due to the demolition, some neighboring sidewalks will be closed, and the trolleybus stop will be moved a few dozen meters. According to the company, the demolition work should not limit traffic or parking in the area in the long term.
The Jihlava City Hall does not protest against the demolition. According to the statement of Mayor Rudolf Chloupek (ČSSD) from last month, the investor is addressing the issue of dilapidated military buildings for which no new use has been found.
The company PSJ purchased the area in a public competition in several stages between 2007 and 2010. The buildings are not protected as historical monuments. In addition to the stone sculpture above the entrance, the investor plans to preserve the granite cladding on the lower parts of the street facades of the former barracks for any future use.
The PSJ brand was established in 1990, and with its holding of companies, it has gradually become one of the largest construction groups in Central Europe. The total revenues of the consolidated PSJ Holding group for the year 2016 amounted to 6.6 billion CZK.
