Jihlava - The reconstruction of one of the nine pavilions of the Psychiatric Hospital in Jihlava will cost approximately 40 million Czech crowns. The functionalist building by architect Bohuslav Fuchs has been closed for several years due to its dilapidated condition. Work is expected to begin in mid-October and be completed next year. A so-called geropsychiatric department for patients over 65 will be created there, with 49 beds, said the hospital director Zdeňka Drlíková today.

The hospital has also managed to acquire part of the land from the disbanded military garrison, where it would like to build a riding arena for equine therapy and therapeutic workshops. The playful appropriation of the military area by the hospital will take place next week to mark the 105th anniversary of inpatient psychiatry in the city.
The appearance of the hospital with its extensive park and gardening is changing, as is the public's attitude towards it. The traditional project of Mental Health Weeks, which ends on Sunday, also contributes to this. The Jihlava Indian Summer included seven theater performances, two exhibitions, but also a disco, a traditional fair, a bonfire, as well as film screenings, concerts, and discussions or a carriage ride through the hospital. Today’s playful Run Through the Hospital recorded a record number of runners and spectators.
"Thanks to the open festival, people perceive the facility as an ordinary hospital, not as a place with an aura of something mysterious, forbidden, or repressive," said director Drlíková to ČTK.
