Česká Třebová (Orlickoústecko) - The town hall in Česká Třebová is preparing extensive modifications to New Square. It has already selected the best designs from the urban-architectural competition. The largest square in the city, built in the 1960s, has lost its original function, said Mayor Jaroslav Zedník (Independents) to ČTK. "Originally the most modern square is at the end of its lifespan. People should gather there and lead a social life. That is not the case today, and we would like to bring that back," Zedník stated. The town hall has already modified Perner Square in front of the train station and the historic Old Square, which is now the focus of residents' interest. According to Zedník, New Square is set to undergo significant changes. For example, a space for concerts, markets, and other city events should be created there. A total of 14 designs were submitted to the open competition with prizes, and the committee recommended the three best. Residents of the city will be able to familiarize themselves with all the designs at an exhibition in the Cultural Center from February 5 to 15. The town hall plans to select the winning design only after the public has acquainted itself with the proposals. "We will choose one of the three awarded designs, but we will also consider the opinions of the people," Zedník said. This year, the city wants to finalize the details of the study with the author of the winning design, and then it will announce a competition for the project documentation. The mayor estimates the costs of the modifications at 60 to 80 million crowns, so he will try to obtain a grant for the project. "The square must fulfill its function for 50 to 60 years; it makes no sense to choose a simple and cheap solution. Residents must also accept it as their own," Zedník added.
