Brno - The reconstructed monument, the City Court on Šilingrovo Square, will become one of the most luxurious hotels in Brno in half a year. The second five-star hotel in the city will be opened by the Spanish hotel chain Barceló in June next year. The hotel will have 119 rooms, including two presidential suites. Mohammed Jobran from the Spanish company Comsa International, which owns and is renovating the building, told ČTK today.

The dilapidated building was sold by the city of Brno to the Spanish company three years ago for 32 million crowns. The new owner committed to renovating the building into a four- to five-star hotel within 36 months of obtaining a building permit and investing at least nine million euros (252 million crowns) into it. However, according to the company’s media representative David Fridrich, just the construction modifications to the more than 150-year-old building required an investment of 11 million euros (308 million crowns), and the hotel furnishings will cost an additional three million euros (84 million crowns).
The hotel rooms will be decorated in a traditional style, with darker colors dominating the interiors, combined with wood and metal. “The furniture comes from Spain, the wallpaper in the rooms from the Netherlands, and decorative elements from the Middle East. Not all rooms will be the same; we had to respect the original layout of the floor plan and walls,” said the interior designer Paco Entrena during the hotel tour to the journalists today.
The extensive five-story palace had previously been unsuccessfully offered by the city as a headquarters for the Supreme Administrative Court or the Antimonopoly Office. Eventually, due to the building’s dilapidated condition and the lack of funds for its repair, the city decided to sell the property to a private investor.
The building previously housed the city museum, and its temporary users gradually vacated it. The former dental clinic of the university hospital found a new location in the Bohunice hospital complex. The city police also vacated the service premises in the corner of the building, and the last to move out was the building authority of the city district Brno-Centre, which relocated to part of the building of a primary school on Mendlovo Square.
Currently, there is only one five-star hotel in Brno, operated by the Holiday Inn chain near the exhibition grounds. More four- to five-star hotels are expected to be established in Brno in the coming years on Masaryk Street near the main railway station and in the former university building in Zelný trh.
The Barceló hotel chain is among the 25 largest hotel operators in the world. It currently operates 185 hotels with 45,000 rooms in 16 countries. Since 1993, it has also been active in the Czech Republic, where it built its very first hotel in Central Europe. Next year, in addition to the City Court hotel in Brno, it plans to open a hotel with half the capacity in Prague.
