Rokycany - Rokycany is considering the construction of a replica of the functionalist summer restaurant designed by one of the most significant architects of the First Republic, František Albert Libra. Due to the intention to return the structure to the local swimming pool, where it was built in the early 1930s, the city has called for a discussion with citizens on Monday, June 28. Jan Baloun, the mayor, told ČTK about this. According to preliminary estimates, the realization of the project would cost around 24 million CZK. "The functionalist structure of the swimming pool elevated it, giving it an unmistakable character," Baloun stated. Today, only a small wooden shack stands in its place. "Longtime residents have been crying for the object to return there," said deputy mayor Marie Hlávková. The idea for the construction of an exact copy of the demolished restaurant was brought up a few years ago by the Rokycany Lions Club. The city of Rokycany subsequently commissioned a study and recently obtained its completion according to the original Libra plans, which are preserved in the archive. "We know how it should look and how much the new structure would roughly cost," the mayor stated. At the next meeting, the councilors will consider whether to conduct a survey among the people regarding the proposal. They are contemplating issuing survey ballots that would allow locals to express their opinions about the project. After that, it will be decided whether the city will continue with the project. "We discussed that this wouldn't be a construction to make a profit from. It would be like having a beautiful statue. We would have a nice swimming pool with a beautiful building," added Baloun. According to the mayor, it is necessary to clarify the question of operating the restaurant. According to some opinions, it will not be possible outside the opening hours of the swimming pool, and in the case of separation from the area, access issues would need to be resolved, and so on. However, the city also needs money for the repair of the swimming pool itself. "So far, we have only completed a third of the bottom, with the remaining part costing 35 million CZK," Hlávková stated. The decision to establish a swimming pool in Rokycany was made by the municipal council in November 1932. At the same time, they commissioned the Prague architect Libra to prepare a project for all upper constructions, including changing rooms, booths, an entrance gate with a cash register, a buffet and café, toilets, a summer restaurant, and a caretaker's house. Libra was one of the leading Czech functionalist architects at that time. According to his design, the city savings bank was also built in Rokycany. The largest and most famous realization by Libra is the sanatorium complex for the treatment of tuberculosis in Vyšné Hágy.
