Prague - The Civic Monitoring Association today filed a complaint regarding the building nicknamed "Marshmallow" with the monument inspection of the Ministry of Culture. CTK was informed of this by its representative Vítězslav Praks. According to earlier statements by Minister of Culture Daniel Herman (KDU-ČSL), the filing of a complaint was necessary for the ministry to address the building. The new building is set to rise next to the Agnes Monastery in the historic center of Prague. "As soon as we receive any request for a remedy, we will definitely address it, because we must operate within all valid legal norms," said Minister Herman in response to an interpellation in Parliament. The ministry's monument inspection can propose measures to the state heritage care authorities to remedy identified deficiencies and oversees their implementation. Critics argue that the six-story multi-colored building with a façade resembling faces next to the 13th-century monastery is inappropriate. Additionally, according to critics, its underground garages will interfere with the groundwater level. The construction also bothers the current director of the National Gallery, which is located in the Agnes Monastery, Jiří Fajt. He stated that he would try to apply his comments in the building proceedings. However, his predecessors agreed with it. The building has sparked protests from hundreds of people in recent days. They gathered in April in front of the Prague 1 office and last week at a discussion evening in the monastery complex. Proponents of the project claim that they want to enrich the city center with quality architecture. "Every new building in a historical city has problems. That is normal," said earlier Francesco Augusto Razetto, the managing director of Praga Progetti e Investimenti, who is the investor of the construction. The company, according to him, has always acted in accordance with the law and has obtained all necessary permits so far. The house was designed by architect Zdeněk Fránek, and the project has been changed several times. For the construction, which the investor has been negotiating for 17 years, the authorities previously issued a zoning decision. Last December, the developer applied for a building permit. Opponents of the construction refer to the negative opinion of the Ministry of Culture and the comments of the National Heritage Institute. However, the project previously received the approval of the city hall's heritage experts.
