Prague - The first stage of the reconstruction of the Barrandov Bridge in Prague ended last night, which began in mid-May. Vehicles can once again travel in all directions across the bridge. Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Prague Sobě) informed about it on Twitter. Workers will still be finishing minor tasks on the northern part of the bridge, which will be completed by Tuesday night.
The Barrandov Bridge, built in 1983, is part of the city ring road and has never been repaired before. Over 140,000 cars cross it daily, making it the busiest road in Prague.
"The Barrandov Bridge is open again. We have successfully completed the first stage of the reconstruction of the century - after 40 years of its operation, the Barrandov Bridge has finally received its first proper repair," Scheinherr stated.
The reconstruction of the bridge began on May 16 this year. Initially, the work was supposed to finish on September 2.
The completion date for the repairs was postponed several times. Due to enforced project adjustments, the completion was pushed to September 29. A few days before the deadline, the contractor requested another extension, this time until October 22. Ultimately, a completion date was agreed upon between the construction manager, which is the Technical Administration of Communications (TSK), and the contractor for last night. It has not yet been decided whether and to what extent the city, through its TSK firm, will impose a possible fine on the construction company Porr for the delay in repairs.
A new feature is the change in traffic signage on the bridge. In the direction from Smíchov to Braník, the newly designated left lane will serve only for vehicles that cross the bridge and continue on the Southern Connection, and it will not be possible to turn from this lane into Modřany. The maximum permitted speed in this lane will be 80 kilometers per hour, which is 30 more than in the other lanes. The aim is to improve traffic on the bridge and to prevent traffic jams.
The reconstruction of the Barrandov Bridge is spread over several years and will last only part of the year each time. The total cost of the work over the entire period will amount to 594.5 million crowns.
