Olomouc - Today, the construction of a new five-story building for the Slavic Gymnasium in Olomouc has begun, which will include classrooms, a school cafeteria, and a gymnasium. The extension next to the historic building will serve students and teachers starting in September 2013, with costs amounting to 189 million crowns. The Olomouc region will use funds from a loan from the European Investment Bank for the investment, said the spokesperson for the regional authority, Ivo Heger, today.

The extension will feature a cafeteria with a capacity of 370 people and the ability to serve lunch to up to 1500 diners not only from the gymnasium but also from two nearby high schools. Plans also include a gymnasium, as the current one is insufficient. An interesting feature will be a playground on the roof of the building.
"Our biggest current weakness is the inadequate specialized classrooms. The extension will have a beautiful classroom for physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, a digital language lab, and, of course, facilities for teachers and additional classrooms," said the director of the gymnasium, Radim Slouka.
The idea for the new building has been around for several years. The first concept was created five years ago, and the final design is by architect Miroslav Pospíšil. "We tried to ensure that it would be modern architecture that sensitively connects with the historic building. The new building will have two wings and will be connected to the original building on all floors," said the architect.
The project also includes outdoor modifications, including access roads, parking lots, and landscaping.
The new building must give way to a temporary wooden structure in the courtyard, whose demolition has already begun. It was constructed in the 1970s and was originally intended to last ten years.
"I was looking forward to the new building being completed earlier; I won't be able to enjoy it. The new cafeteria and better-equipped classrooms are especially needed," said third-year student Beáta Strejčková.
The gymnasium is currently located in a historic building on Jiřího z Poděbrad Avenue and in a building on Pasteur Street. "The capacity on Pasteur Street is ten classrooms, but there are 14 located there. After the new building is constructed, we would alleviate this building. In the future, we also plan modifications to the historic building, where a modern library or community hall would be created," added Slouka.
The Slavic Gymnasium in Olomouc is the oldest institution of its kind in Olomouc. It was established in 1867. Emperor Franz Joseph I even attended the first graduation in 1872, although at that time the school was operating in temporary premises. Later, it was located in a building on nearby Kosinova Street, and the construction of the current building began in 1913. Currently, the Slavic Gymnasium has nearly 1000 students.
