Sokolov - Sokolov will have a project prepared for the renovation of the former Capuchin monastery at the Old Square. The goal is to open the monument, which today houses the city company Sokolovská bytová, to the public, including the unique medieval trusses. The outer parts of the monastery complex, which are still rather hidden from the public, should also be transformed, said Sokolov's mayor Petr Kubis (ANO) to journalists today.
"The essential thing to say is that we have managed to establish a rather close cooperation directly with the Capuchin order, so we have already met several times, and they will be a significant part of all these works. Because it is not just about the trusses, but also about the cellar spaces that we have cleared, as well as the outer part of the monastery, where we would like to make adjustments," Kubis stated.
The Capuchin monastery in Sokolov was founded during the mass establishment of Capuchin monasteries in Bohemia in the 17th century. It includes the Church of St. Anthony of Padua, which today serves for cultural or social events.
The city will use a grant from the Just Transition program to acquire project documentation for about 3.3 million crowns, which should include several parts. The basis will be mapping the current state, including a construction-technical survey, mycological survey, and laser measurement of the building. The next step will be the development of an architectural study that should propose the optimal solution for making the historical part of the monastery accessible.
According to Kubis, plans also include changes to the outdoor part of the area, with unsightly garages set to be removed or rebuilt, while greenery that was once part of the monastery, including, for example, a garden, should be restored. The city would also like to obtain grants for the actual reconstruction and accessibility of the monastery, added the mayor of Sokolov.
