Vrchlabí (Trutnovsko) January 8 (ČTK) - The administration of the Krkonošsko National Park will open a new Krkonošské Center for Environmental Education in Vrchlabí on Thursday. The construction of the building, which earned the nickname "Krtek" (Mole), cost 85.5 million crowns. The park's spokesperson Radek Drahný told journalists today. In the building designed by Petr Hájek, a lecture hall with a capacity of 76 listeners and space for a laboratory and classroom have been created. The facility also offers exhibition space, a library, an ecological counseling center, and support facilities. Another part of the building contains garage parking spaces. The main structures are made of exposed concrete, and the interior partition walls and furniture are made of plywood panels. "Each panel is measured so that no waste material is produced during its manufacture,” said Hájek. The shape of the house, which is set into the ground, draws from the geometry of the Krkonoš mountain range. The building is located on the edge of the castle park near the administration building of KRNAP, and its green roof is covered with mountain stonecrops. Also notable are the 4.3-meter high, undivided fireproof glass walls. According to the director of KRNAP, Jan Hřebačka, acquiring the new building marks the beginning of a new phase in environmental education for KRNAP. "Until now, we did not have appropriate facilities for this activity,” Hřebačka stated. The building will host programs for children from all types of schools as well as the general public. "We are also preparing day camps, specialized seminars, and lectures,” said Drahný. The building was nicknamed "Krtek" based on a public vote. The grand opening is scheduled for Thursday at 4:00 PM, when there will also be a vernissage of macro photography by Petr J. Juračka. For example, on January 23, the director of the Dvůr Králové Zoo, Přemysl Rabas, will be giving a lecture at the new center.
