Tachov – The Railway Administration (SŽ) has commenced the reconstruction of the train station building in Tachov for 44 million crowns. The renovation, which will last until mid-2023, will involve both the interior and exterior spaces, and the façade of the building will be returned to a look corresponding to the first half of the 20th century, said SŽ spokesperson Radka Pistoriusová to ČTK today. The town welcomes the reconstruction; according to mayor Ladislav Macák (Patriots of Tachov), they have been advocating for it since 2008, when the properties were still owned by Czech Railways. The station is used by passengers primarily heading towards Planá near Mariánské Lázně, where express trains from Prague to Plzeň to Cheb to Germany stop, but also by many tourists in the opposite direction to Domažlice. This will improve the appearance of the entrance to the town, the mayor said.
"The goal is to bring the building, including its immediate surroundings, into an appropriate condition from a construction, technical, and aesthetic perspective," said the spokesperson. The internal modifications will include, for example, the replacement of ceiling structures, adjustments to passenger areas, and new restrooms. SŽ will insulate the outer shell, replace windows and doors. The areas around the building will also be modified, and the space of the eastern annex will be utilized for new parking spaces.
"I started fighting for this in 2008. Czech Railways had demolished a warehouse there at that time, but then the director told me that the construction of the III. railway corridor was starting and that all funds would go to it and that Tachov would not be done. When I returned to the office in 2018, I began fighting again," Macák stated. The town then agreed with SŽ to build the sewer system in Nádražní Street at its own expense, which has been completed since the year before last.
"I am glad that it will happen. It is the entrance to the town from Germany, from Planá. And one of the first things that arriving visitors see is a very outdated and shabby building where even the toilets hardly work. When you enter the hallway of the building, you have the impression that no one has been there for 50 years and that nothing has been done. The only new thing there is the roof," noted Macák.
The station is situated on a single-track line where diesel multiple units operate. The Planá - Tachov line was opened in 1895 and already then connected to the main railway line linking Vienna, České Budějovice, and Cheb. The newly built station in Tachov was established there in 1910 as a terminal station, as part of the Domažlice - Tachov railway with a connection to the Planá - Tachov railway.
